Firefox for Android: specify default search engine

You can specify a default search engine other than Google in Firefox for Android. I'll take the DuckDuckGo as example:

Once you have installed your add-on, write about:config in the address bar. There you can Add a New Setting:

  • Select String as type;
  • Enter browser.search.defaultenginename as name;
  • Enter DuckDuckGo as value.

Otherwise, you can also tap the menu button, go to Tools, Add-ons, select your Search Add-on and tap on Set as Default.

Copyleft symbol

At this time there is no copyleft symbol in the Unicode character encoding standard. Some methods consist in using the copyright symbol and apply a symmetry on it. Here is how.

HTML:

<p><span class="copyleft">&copy;</span> Copyleft ...</p>

CSS:

.copyleft {
    display: inline-block;
    -moz-transform: scaleX(-1);
    -o-transform: scaleX(-1);
    -webkit-transform: scaleX(-1);
    transform: scaleX(-1);
    filter: FlipH;
    -ms-filter: "FlipH";
}

Note that I prefer writing Copyleft next to the symbol, because it is still semantically considered as a copyright one. Also, a lot of old browsers may not display it correctly.

Garmin Forerunner 410

Install pyusb10 from AUR:

$ yaourt -S pyusb10

Install pip2:

# pacman -S python2-pip

Download python-ant-downloader from GitHub and install it:

$ git clone https://github.com/braiden/python-ant-downloader.git
$ cd python-ant-downloader
# pip2 install .

To access the USB device as a normal user, add the following line to /etc/udev/rules.d/99-garmin.rules

SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="0fcf", ATTR{idProduct}=="1008", MODE="666"

Launch ant-downloader.

$ ant-downloader

The first time it should ask for pairing: answer 'yes' on your GPS device.

Now you can set your preferences (like your Garmin Connect login and password) in ~/.antd/antd.cfg.

Switch keyboard to bépo

I decided to learn the french bépo keyboard layout. Since I still write in azerty, I prefer not to make this new layout definitive.

To switch to bépo in X11, type the following command:

$ setxkbmap fr bepo

To switch back to azerty (Belgian):

$ setxkbmap be

i3: force specific windows as always floating

Sometimes you don't want i3 to open a window in tiling mode. This is generally the case for popups or preference windows, like the one in Firefox (version 20). While most of them are correctly handled by i3, some programs don't set the right window type on those windows.

A way to fix it is to add a rule like this in your ~/.i3/config:

for_window [class="Firefox" instance="Browser"] floating enable

To find out the class and instance of your window, launch xprop and click on it.

This will give you the window properties.

Look at the WM_CLASS(STRING) = "Browser", "Firefox". The first one is the instance and the second one is the class.

Configure Vimperator

Set default search engine:

:set defsearch=duckduckgo

Set window title:

:set titlestring="Mozilla Firefox - Vimperator"

You can make these settings default by putting them in ~/.vimperatorrc.
